Position Description

The Physician Assistant Program at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a Didactic Education Director starting during the spring 2019 semester. The Director serves as a full-time non-tenure-track faculty member with rank appropriate to the applicant’s experience. Xavier’s Physician Assistant Program is a new program implemented in partnership with Ochsner Health System with projected start date of spring 2020.

 The Didactic Education Director is instrumental in the day-to-day operations of the Physician Assistant Program and the education of its students. The Didactic Education Director will work closely with the Program Director to provide effective leadership and guidance to faculty and staff members involved in the didactic phase of the program. The Didactic Education Director will have one day of release time to support involvement in clinical practice or scholarship.

 Founded in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, XULA is Catholic and historically Black. Located in New Orleans, the ultimate purpose of the University is to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society.

Successful candidates must have at least a Master’s degree as a physician assistant or in a related discipline from an accredited physician assistant program and be NCCPA certified and currently licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a physician assistant in Louisiana. In addition, candidates should have at least three years of clinical experience as a physician assistant. Previous faculty experience in a PA Program is preferred, but not required.

Essential job duties:

  1. With the Program Director and other faculty members, participate in implementing, coordinating, overseeing and designing a the didactic curriculum;
  2. Participate in accreditation activities, accreditation documentation and leading the implementation of quality assurance practices related to the didactic education curriculum, students, and instructors;
  3. Participate in developing, maintaining, overseeing, and ensuring adequacy and appropriateness of all didactic courses to ensure that they are in accordance with the ARC-PA Standards;
  4. Serve as a course instructor in appropriate areas;
  5. Coordinate the scheduling of all faculty in order to optimize delivery of instructional content in various topics to students.
  6. Review and provide feedback to faculty for all didactic courses including course syllabi, instructional materials, and instructional methods;
  7. Participate in recruitment, selection, and admission of applicants to the program;
  8. Participate in scholarly activities including research and active participation in state or national organizations;
  9. Assist in reviewing and updating the Student Handbook on an annual basis;
  10. Chair the Curriculum Committee to provide continuous assessment of the overall program, making changes as necessary to ensure continued compliance with ARC-PA accreditation Standards.
  11. Ensure appropriate advising and mentoring of students;
  12. Assures the availability of remedial instruction;
  13. Participate in grant development initiatives and self-studies related to ongoing funding and program accreditation;
  14. Participate in program, college, university committees, and attend related functions;
  15. Maintain clinical competency and knowledge of current best practices within the profession; and
  16. Partner with the Director of Clinical Education in order to optimize a seamless transition from the didactic phase into the clinical phase of the program.
